Proclaiming my Undying Love .... Curry Mee, anyone?

My undying love for anything remotely resembling curry mee, be it dry or wet, santan-full or santan-less, spicy/sour/sweet, from north to south and everywhere else, led me to this place near to Medan Gopeng in Ipoh, a hop and skip away from the famed cave of Sam Poh Tong.

DA boss himself in action .....

This stall is operated by the owner of the shop itself. Specializing in Hainan style curry noodles, as well as other items such as Hainan toast with butter + kaya, and steamed bread, it seems the husband to the owner of the shop (her name's Elise by the way) is a relative of Yee Fatt's, hence the specialty of Hainan curry noodles.

Curry Mee with Chicken, Potatoes, Cockles, and Prawns (RM3.50)

Mr Z had the soup version of the curry noodle, which came brimming with cockles (a LOAD of them, to be exact!), which were passed on to me as he's no fan of cockles. It's lucky to dine with people who don't take certain ingredients I tell you, like KYT for the shrimps/prawns he always gave up on. But I wonder what FCOE doesn't take and would forfeit to the Motormouth. Hmm .....
Tastewise? The curry is very thick, laden with coconut milk (santan), and redolent with spices, albeit a little sweet. A little oily and rich for breakfast, but there's nothing more satisfying than a bowl of luscious, filling bowl of curry noodles.

Dry Curry Noodles with plentiful of ingredients (RM3.50). Look at all those cockles !!!

No doubt I'd opt for the dry curry version. The gravy's different from the curry soup variety; thicker, but not too much santan. Equally potent, nonetheless. Reminded me a lot of Yee Fatt's version actually, which was a good thing. With beancurd (tau pok) as well, soaking up all the delicious gravy. But the sheer amount of tiny cockles was mind-boggling, I was practically munching on them throughout the experience. No char siew (BBQ pork) or siew yoke (roasted pork) though, which makes this a PORK-free version.

Other items they dish out include - Curry Mutton Rice, Nasi Lemak and Sizzling Noodles

Toast with Kaya and Butter (RM2)

A little greasy/messy from all the curry? Curry-phobic (hehe) from all the spicy/fiery food you've had lately? No sweat. They take pride in their Hainan toast or steamed bread with homemade kaya and butter.

Looks aside, the toasts was pretty good, with a REAL slab of butter (no margarine business), and generous pairing with authentic, homemade kaya, raised the bar a few notches. You can choose to have them with some half-boiled eggs, but between the two of us, after the curry noodles, we were filled to the brim; lasting us until lunch.

Teh C Ice & Barley drink

Beverage-wise, the Hainan milk tea, Hainan coffee, and even the Sarawak's famous 3-Layered Tea (tea + evaporated milk + gula melaka syrup) are the recommended ones. My glass of cold Teh C (tea with evaporated milk) was satisfactory, though I agree to fully enjoy the beverage, you have to order the hot version, undiluted.

Location : Pusat Makanan Medan Lapangan Lagenda @ 69-71 Medan Lagenda 1, Taman Lapangan Permai, 31350 Ipoh, Perak. Got MAP !!!

From Simpang Pulai toll exit, towards Ipoh on Jalan Raja Dr Nazrin Shah, you'll pass by this row of shops on your left, before reaching Sam Poh Tong cave on your right.

UPDATED 4/6/09 = Opening hours : 7am til 11pm (the shop), 7am til 3.30pm (curry mee stall). Info thanks to Elise, the owner.

When outstation frens drop by Ipoh, the 1st thing in mind is Nga Choy Kai which seems to associates with Ipoh Town. Me as a host..I'll simply introduce them Curry Mee. Strangely it is available only for breakfast.

No surprised, they simply luv it as they never taste such version at thier own towns.
Me FOREever a big FAN of Curry Mee.

BTW, I just tested out 1 new Kopitiam stall (tat specialises in tong sui), right opposite kong Heng oldtown (service suks though crowded)& its wet curry version in fact is good, so is thier nasi lemak.

Try it out dude..will await for your review over this new outlet.

foodbin : curry laksa. oh yeah, thats what southerners call them eh?

UnkaLeong : sure, waiting to see if you're digging this or not.

Selba : sure, i'll courier one empty bowl over ...

Food Paradise : this one is easy, exiting the Simpang Pulai toll, will sure pass by. but do drop by Nam Chau or Yee Fatt also.

hcpen : Ipoh ppl generally dig curry mee, wet or dry. :)

BangsarBabe : true! I can almost imagine myself having plates after plates of them dry version, day in day out. IF my waistline and cholesterol level dont give way 1st!

LFB : pair curry mee with milky beverages, cant go wrong!

allie : maybe Ipoh/KL version got dry curry instead? Penang's version a little heavier on the santan.

bluesoule : wont diarrhoea one lah ... you can always steal some Lomotil from Thomas. =P

550ml jar of faith : KL ah? aiyo, I'll be needing recommendations then. but curry laksa a lot of places have them, even in shopping complex.

Hulk : i know! it's All Inn Cafe! I go for tong sui in the mornings, their honeydew sago very nice, and the aloe vera tong sui also good. but the nasi lemak (less) rather disappointing, as i like mine richer and fragrant.
they've an outlet near Sun Yuan Loong in Pasir Puteh as well.

mimid3vils : thick, rich and oily? :)

SImplegirl : breakfast til lunch it seems. i can confirm for you if you want.

Sugar Bean : cockles sweet ma! those tiny ones, offering a squishy, bouncy bite!

thanks a lot, motormouth!!

I bet the toast here definitely will be better than those air-cond kopitiam at anytime.

The curry mee no doubt is nice...the curry mee soup certainly has more santan than usually.
Those health conscience people...think twice...you wouldn't want clogged arteries...eating too much of it.

YilingL said...

wow too rich lah the curry mee....

hahahaahaha now you caught me there, my Master Food Traveller. I bet this place is new as I have not heard about it, not even from Citygal herself as she too stays near by this area, lol! I think it is good to head to try this new place, as your photos look damn awesome and also I am a curry noodle fan, what to do we are Ipoh mali! My mum will definitely get to enjoy this new place when I get back home and take her to this place.

SimpleGirl : welcome! do refer to the last updated portion at the end of my post.

cariso : it is. previously Old Town White Coffee's toasts were ok, one of their edible item, then things got from bad to worse.

ziktor : still rmbr the AFTER effect of that sinful bowl of curry noodles to you. =P

YiLing : a bit. you can almost taste the santan from here!

BBO : i'm still searching for citygal's recommended yong tau foo in Gunung Rapat lah ...

happy happy : haha, go to a nearest shop and have them.

Little Inbox : yeah, me too. cant tahan those more soy sauce than curry paste kind of dry curry mee.

Nic : aiyo, y so cham one? go go ... get a bowl of your own!

FBB : wei me Hainanese also lah! hahaha ... long live Motormouth also?

Hulk : oppo Sun Yuan Loong near Jln Bendahara one. the one in pasir putih. I'll be in KL myself this weekend! hahah ... where you're getting the GPS? and in Ipoh, I've NO idea where to get good nasi lemak, sorry. most i've tried, from the shop to warung, all not special.

kevin chung : cheap eh? but 5 yrs ago, RM3.50 for a serving can be considered exp liao.

ck lam : tasty, thick curry chicken.

Pureglutton : thanks! cool and hip? ya meh? hehehe, considering the person who created that IS an uncle, that means a lot!

Julian Si : Xin Quan Fang? deadly curry paste. but volatile mood lah ...

ahlock said...

The curry mee looks awesomely delicious. Must give this place a try.

kevin_chungx said...

yeah,i think the most expensive one is the famous sun seng fatt's curry noodles

J2Kfm said...

ahlock : yeah, but rmbr, looks also can be deceiving. :) different people, different palate. try the dry version 1st, before going for the 'lemak'ful soup one.

kevin chung : IF you order the noodles separately from the sides. then yes, each person can eat up to RM8 and above.

www.aeco.com.my

They are the sole Garmin GPS distributor & the price are reasonable. Check them out as thier office outlet is at Digital Mall KL.

Others are mainly AP sets or appointed vendor by Aeco.

You should get on even a base line unit 205 RM639.
Just punch the place of interest..it will direct u accurately. Most cab use it now...it even inform u of roadblock area.Direct u the nearest route. Can never go wrong.

J2Kfm said...

thanks Hulk. but seeing that I'm normally traveling along the routes in Perak only, shouldnt be a problem? KL, yes. definitely need one.

Thank you for highlighting the curry noodle stall. Sadly, the taste was not as I expected. The curry was bland, not tasty at all and how disappointed I was. A lady, yes, the man you showed in the picture was not there served the curry noodle using pieces of salad and cabbage. What a letdown! How can a bowl of curry use these stuff? And not even a slice of potato was found inside as shown in the picture. Obviously, the owner is not consistent with their food. Well, what is good for you could not be the same for everybody, you might say. And yes, I will not go there anymore!
