Al fresco dining option @ alexis
But of course, this blog aims to please the inner foodies in everyone, NOT rants on political matters. Blogs of political nature are ample enough to go around in the blogosphere for years to come, or possibly until the next election. Hehe ....
Selection of delights to please the sweet tooth ...
Searching high and low for a spot for tea break, we were torn between Cova, Alexis, SBread and Nyonya Colors. Nah ... Drop the last one. Over-rated pricey nyonya kuih. (Flamers still welcomed. Fanboys anyone? =P) Ended up at Alexis on 1st floor of The Gardens. Pretty easy to locate, though hidden in one corner.
Black and White Chocolate Cake (RM11)The place was strangely quite empty. But it was a weekday's evening, after all. Ushered to a corner and seated. The ambience exudes a cool, cozy, and modern aura at the same time. Perfect for a chattering good time. Walked over to the cakes counter, picked 2 slices and whipped my tool out. My phone, I meant. Hehe ...
Chocolate Nutty Meringue (Rm13)
I was snapping at the wide array of cakes at the counter, when I noticed the waitress whispering to another. Then as I was about to shoot the beautiful wine display rack, a waitress warned me not to, as it's in their 'policy' not to let customers take photos, and I'd have to request permission from their manager. Huh? WTF .... I explained that I was snapping the photos for personal use, nothing more. Still she insisted that I talk to the manager first.
Ridiculous. To sum up my feelings at that moment. What if I'm celebrating a birthday/anniversary at that time, and cameras are clicking away, as expected. Must I put my hands up (ala primary school students) and apply for a written attestation? Not one to create a scene, I retraced my steps and waited 'eagerly' for their prized desserts.
The ambience ... supposedly dimmed yellow lights, but credits to my hp. Haha!!
The meringue cake fared better IMO, as the abundance of macadamia nuts did the trick. The black and white chocolate cake sucked, big time. To pour salt to the wound, that was a recommended item by the guy manning the counter (who BTW, was not fluent at all when suggesting recommendations). Plain water was NOT served, until we requested for them, although the bunch of waiters were chatting away near the counter. And don't even wish for them to refill your water without prompts. Yeah, and service charge is 10%. Go figure.

hmmm... poor u! not a nice experience.. but nicely taken shots with ur phone camera tho the lighting was dim - impressive! i must say that the carrot cake and pavlova they serve at the telawi branch are pretty decent tho.. maybe its just this branch?
poor thing.... nvr mind la...
but one thing, Penang will never ever have such shop... i wonder why? perhaps no market?
cumi & ciki : the meringue was good, two thumbs up, but the other chocolate cake was just too sweet. that's about it. disappointed over the service, mainly.
NKOTB : oh, be grateful Pg has WAY more than Ipoh could ever hope for. haha ...
*Gasp* Noooo~!
Lolz.. ok ya their food kinda sucks actually but no no! You tried the wrong thing.. They've this Moist choc cake! Omg it is heavenly.. They heat it up before serving n its like.. You must go try it la~~ =P
Let me know after! :)
oh really? I was asking for recommendation, but the guy manning the counter kept pushing only the pavlova and meringue. Meringue was good, but the dual chocolate cake was not.
OK, i'll take your word for it, next time then!
I've been to Alexis a couple of times because my ex always insisted going there for cakes. I agree with you though that the cakes there are god-awful. I remember going for their tiramisu which was supposed to be 'one of the best'. What arrived didnt even resemble a tiramisu nor tasted like one. It was served with a raspberry compote which I thought was chilli sauce. I have no problem with reinventing food as it does add excitement for the dinner, but the actual flavour/ identity of the dish should never be sacrificed.
On my second visit, I opted for their bread & butter pudding. This pudding is probably one of the easiest puddings to make - kids in england get thought how to make it at the age of 13 in home economics classes. Again, it tasted nothing like bread and butter pudding but more like raisin sponge cake with cream and ice cream.
... I have since dumped my ex :P
p/s I do run a food blog myself, and am from Ipoh (although most of my reviews are re: restaurants in London)
thanks genuiness for dropping by and the enlightenment ... :)
glad somebody shares my opinion. though the tiramisu it seems is from Suchan, which I kinda like. oops .. contradictory statement?
heard pretty of good comment of the cakes and famous with tiramisu, so we brought...dissapointed with Tiramisu, we thought it will be a tranditional tiramisu with creamy mascarpone cheese, coffee liquor and lady finger(sponge finger) with such high price. but Tiramisu in alexis is cheese with cake and lot of nuts....tranditional one shouldn't have cake and nuts...and the taste is bit sweet....it is a nice cake , overall....it's a modern tiramisu, but i hope it can hav the basic tiramisu taste which have nice coffee taste...but alexis one....it is a nice cake if not calling it tiramisu
choc cake is nice too , if the sweetness can reduce and use the dark choc...
Try their banoffee pie..
in this place you really can say "yeah piece of cake!" I can't believe all the variety in cakes that this place have, for sure I gonna end with Diabetes for eat many of those cakes.
This bistro is awesome.
