WARNING !!! Non-Halal at Its Best? - Char Siew, Siew Yoke and Pig's Innards Porridge @ Bercham, Ipoh

Work was crawling at a tortoise's speed lately. Everyone, from all backgrounds and races, are still reeling from the festivities, and the "Raya mood" still very much alive and kickin' ....
Wong Fee Kee @ Bercham Main Road/Lorong Bercham 5 corner
Off we went for lunch in Bercham, all four of the original Makan Gang, joined by another two lunatics, ahem, officers (",) working at an asylum in Tg. Rambutan.

Porridge aka Congee aka Bubur aka Kanji.

KYT was the one raving about this porridge stall at this restaurant in Bercham. Directions to come at the end of the post. Pretty easy to locate, but parking your vehicles may be a chore. Most drivers park theirs haphazardly by the roadside. And guess what? The authority just couldn't care less.

Zhu Zhap Chuk (Mixed Pig's Innards Porridge) @ RM3.00

The man sells a variety of porridge, from the average pork meat and innards, to fish and eels, and even shark's meat. Yup, anything and everything goes. Sometimes having some plain and smooth, good ol' porridge's perfect for detoxification purposes, and "clearing the bowels", or so they say. But with so much temptations around us, plain porridge ain't cutting it, no?

Coagulated blood, intestines, liver, and what-nots from the swine, cooked in the smooth and tasteful porridge base

Finding good porridge nowadays is tough. Finding a good pig's innards porridge is even tougher. And this one did not disappoint. The deep-fried parts stole the limelight, providing some crunch and texture in contrast to the smooth and piping hot porridge, while the jelly-like coagulated pig's blood was fortunately lacking in unpleasant aroma. The pig's liver cuts were generous, though may evoke paranoia and havoc in a health freak's diet.

Crispy, sinful Siew Yoke (Crispy Roasted Pork) RM5 and ....

.... sweet, caramelized Char Siew (BBQ marinated pork) RM5

If you consider porridge to be somewhat lacking as a meal on its own, do not fret. "Help" is on the way. Or rather, a few stalls away. The aunty selling roast pork and BBQ pork was doing brisk business, and I've full faith in her products, as my family's been loyal customers since aeons ago. Mostly during festivities.

The crispy roasted pork was delicious, the meat not too salty and the accompanying chilli sauce not too overpowering. Some serve theirs with too much garlicky taste, drowning the meat's flavour. Surprisingly, the Char Siew won me over with its sweet, sticky, and slightly charred, caramelized ends, drizzled liberately with the luscious sweet and savoury sauce. No chilli sauce needed for the scrumptious cuts of meat. (Btw, she doesn't sell chicken, or rice for that matter). Perfect accompaniments for your noodles, or porridge.

Still craving for more?

Deep-fried Popiah (Spring Rolls) RM1.50

Egg Skin Popiah RM2.60

Right beside the Siew Yoke aunty, was this stall selling Popiah. Tried their deep-fried popiah before, and was pleasantly surprised she's selling egg-skin popiah as well. Something Jason might wanna take notice. :)

Whoops. Our plan to eat a "Healthy & Simple" meal was thwarted by my glutton instincts. But I'm sure the others wont mind, right? RIGHT? =P

Location : WONG FEE KEE @ Jln Bercham/Lorong Bercham 5. Exiting from PLUS highway Ipoh Selatan toll, you'll reach a traffic lights, then turn RIGHT. The sign should say Bercham. Then at the next traffic lights at a slope, turn right again, and you'll see Tesco Extra on your left. Go straight for a while, passing by rows and rows of shops on your left and right, and 3 consecutive traffic lights. Then the road will get narrower, and you'll be able to see Lorong Bercham 1, 2, 3 and so on. Wong Fee Kee is on your left, at Lorong bercham 5's junction. Daytime only.

Trivia : What's in THOSE buckets?

Bercham has some excellent classic oldy eats , which might be better than many in da old town itself , who knows one fine day you can start a new cafe chain called

De Berchamps

and franchise it accordingly from the great menus extracted straight from your posts . Team Bsg can offer to gluttonise the first virgin bowl of the super not halal thing , in front of the Star

I like the zhu zap chok, and the crispy roasted pork! Have you ever see people eat roasted pork without the crispy skin? :P

Elin Chia said...

Now we know where to get nice zhu zap chok but I dun like the coagulated pig blood..it doesn't come with the porridge right unless you request for it?

J2Kfm said...

jencooks : yeah, soy sauce in all their glory! last time I used to avoid the blood, cz very yucky when they served them in curry noodles in Pg.

life for beginners : was that a thanks? :) I'll take that into account. welcome!

suwei : yeah, last time KYT also avoid at all cost. luckily he morphing to a new person.

J2Kfm said...

fcoe : yeah, it was one of the better ones. thanks to kyt? why? :) cz he left everything untouched?

steven goh : erm, I gave directions at the end of the post.
hope that helps. it's just a straight road from Tesco Extra (previously Makro) to this place.

u make it sound so crude calling it pig innards. The correct term is offal. See sounds so much more POSH :D

by the by, the british also hv a form of the coagulated blood - they call it Black Pudding and they mix cereal (no not the kellogg's cornflakes...) or oatmeal into the blood and then solidify it in a sausage shape. Actually if you look at the food of different continents, there is some form of Blood Sausage/ Tofu in each and every culture! Don't believe me? Wiki it!

J2Kfm said...

thanks genuiness! :)
but offal may sound posh, but I bet most do not correlate the name to the humble porridge. they ARE innards, aren't they? hehe ...

yeah, blood sausage. I wonder how they taste like.

Anonymous said...

Wiki offal, it refers to entrails or internal organs of a butchered animal. Originally, the term offal was coined to refer to itnernal organs which were not fit for human consumption (people would burn it for fuel) It refers to various different parts with no specifics it would be an apt as the name of the porridge is 'Chu Chap Chook'

Blood sausage taste a bit like chicken livers except it has a grainy texture and makes ur teeth go black.

hey, me n my colleauge found tis place recently also, n now we frequently come here for lunch.. luckily didnt catch me in ur photos...luv the porridge, n personal fav, there is a stal next to the chasiew siu yok stal tat sells fried rice/ noodle which i like.

ps. the shop opposite wong fee kee sell good nam yu pao.(though the rest of the pao is just mediocre)

J2Kfm said...

genuiness : thanks again for the explanation. burn them for fuel? ouch. such a waste, no? :)

mycroft : thanks for the tips! Nam Yu Bao's pretty hard to find nowadays. not to mention GOOD ones. luckily you did not see someone snapping pics while others digging in. =P

Raynebow said...

I love chee chap chook ... hard to find good ones in KL/PJ...

J2Kfm said...

raynebow : ditto with Ipoh's selection. previously there was another in town, near Super Kinta there. but that was YEARS ago.

Wen Xuan said...

EEEEKKKK Motormouth!!!

You've been to that shop!!
D'you know that the porridge stall also sells the best fish head beehoon???!!!

Everytime when i go back to KL, I will definitely eat it, along with the Pasir Pinji CCF!!!

You gotta try it!! Sour and not too salty!! And also the fish is very fresh as they fry it per order!!

Anonymous said...

Oooh, egg skin popiah... and so near to my house! Will see if it's qualified to be a strong competitor to my favourite popiah at Man U.

J2Kfm said...

wen xuan : oh never knew that. thanks for the recommendation. I'm a fan of fish head beehoon, but only with added milk in the soup.

jason : strong competitor it may not be though. the skin's a novelty, but the filling I find them a bit soggy. do try them.

mycroft said...

the porridge stall do make good porridge, but somehow the fish head beehoon taste diferent. taste more like ham choi beehoon, n not much milk... probably nice to some, but for me, i like it more conventional.
