Fast forward around 20 years, the shop stood the test of time, and is still packed every morning by patrons coming for their famous white coffee, toast, and egg sponge layer cake ("Kai Tan Kou"). Opposite of this shop stood Nam Heong, another coffee shop famous for its white coffee, and its Old Town Kopitiam branches.
There are a few stalls selling noodle, char kuey teow etc, but most, if not all, come for the coffee, and the famed toasts. At RM1.40 for a plate of 2 slices, they still use the same Hainanese white bread loaf, thinly sliced and toasted to perfection. The kaya and butter combination is a killer, as usual.
Orange MuffinInitially I asked for the egg sponge cake, but the owner said it is only available in the evening. I eyed various type of snacks on counter, eg. curry puffs, and some strange looking muffins marked O and L. Being the curious cat that I am, I asked what were they. Seems these are muffins, tasted just like egg sponge cake, but the outer crust is crunchy, and the O represents orange flavor while L is lemon.
At Rm1.20 per piece, it was soft in the centre, and slightly crunchy at the outer crust area. The filling of orange cream is lovely, tangy, and not too sweet. Definitely a must-try item.Tea and Coffee ... a staple at this shop
Although coffee should be enjoyed hot, piping hot in their signature porcelain cup, we were in a rush, and not to mention the weather was pretty hot, we had to order cold version of the drinks. Rich, aromatic, not too sweet, just perfect as a pick-me-up beverage early in the morning. Even the milk tea was nice.
A highly recommended breakfast joint, even if only for the toasts and coffee.
Location : Jalan Bandar Timah, diagonally opposite of the tall, famed 20-storeys flat.
